Local Mitigation Strategy Survey
What is a Local Mitigation Strategy?
A Local Mitigation Strategy (LMS) is a plan designed to reduce or eliminate risks to people & property from natural & man-made hazards.
These LMS plans identify the natural hazards that may affect a single or multiple local jurisdictions, such as a town, city, or county. LMS plans assess risks & vulnerabilities, identify actions to reduce losses from those hazards identified, & establish a coordinated process to implement the plan using a wide range of public & private investments.
The LMS steering committee reviews & approves plans for submission to the Division of Emergency Management annually. Please send any comments or questions you have about Marion County's LMS to Kenneth.Odom@MarionFL.org or call 352-438-2620.
Want to learn more about how to get ready for disasters, find safe evacuation routes, stay updated during emergencies, and how to recover afterward? Visit the Division of Emergency Management website for more information.

Why update our LMS plan?
FEMA requires local governments to develop & adopt such hazard mitigation plans as a condition for receiving certain types of non-emergency disaster assistance, including funding for mitigation projects. Jurisdictions must update their hazard mitigation plans & re-submit them for FEMA approval every five years to maintain eligibility.
We have reached that time where it is necessary to update the Local Mitigation Strategy five-year plan to remain concurrent with requirements as established by FEMA & the Florida Department of Emergency Management.
